Sudan logs 36 new cholera deaths nationwide

Sudan’s Health Ministry reported 1,210 new cholera infections, including 36 deaths, in the past week. The General Abdel Fattah al Burhan-controlled ministry said the recent cases pushed the total outbreak toll to 102,831 infections and 2,561 deaths since August 2024.

Officials noted infections declined in some states but surged in others, without disclosing the specific regions affected by the disease. On August 6, the World Health Organization confirmed cholera cases had spread across all 18 Sudanese states, underscoring nationwide vulnerability.

The outbreak unfolds amid Sudan’s ongoing civil war between Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces, raging since April 2023. The conflict has left tens of thousands dead and forced millions to flee, compounding public health challenges across the country.

Health experts warn that war-torn infrastructure and disrupted sanitation services intensify the cholera crisis, leaving communities exposed and fragile. Humanitarian agencies struggle to deliver aid amid insecurity, while medical facilities face shortages of essential supplies and personnel.

Authorities urge citizens to maintain hygiene and safe water practices, stressing that early treatment can prevent severe cholera complications. The cholera outbreak, entwined with civil strife, paints a grim portrait of Sudan’s ongoing humanitarian and public health emergency.
