Civil society efforts by Sudan’s Zaghawa tribe have secured the release of more than 15 detainees from Zamzam camp and Nyala city. Community leaders said those held at the Dagris detention centre, 20 kilometres southwest of Nyala in South Darfur, were freed.
A Zaghawa leader, requesting anonymity, said mediation by the tribe’s Shura Council, in coordination with local authorities and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), achieved the release. Among the freed were more than six minors, arrested after RSF in Zamzam camp in April, while others were detained in Nyala recently.
The detainees, described as in good health, were transferred to Al-Radwan School in Nyala’s Al-Jir neighbourhood, where they await reunion with families. Those released were reportedly compelled to swear an oath not to reveal information, act against the RSF, or cooperate with opposing groups.
Names released include Adel Saleh Dafallah Qardiya, Mujahid Ibrahim Adam Khater, Abu Al-Qasim Khamis Abdullah, Abdul Aziz Ibrahim Al-Nour, and Hamid Mohammed Ishaq Ramadan. Others named were Ahmed Ibrahim Abdel Daim, Mohammed Ibrahim Jalba Idris, Amer Hamid Abkar Mohammed, Omar Abdullah Abkar, and Mubarak Mukhtar Mohammed.
The list also featured Mubarak Hassan Abdullah, Abdullah Hassan Haroun, Muawiya Mohammed Adam Dabo, Mohammed Adam Suleiman, Mohammed Al-Hajj Taban Ibrahim, and Yasser Ahmed Mohammed Juma.
