The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says 24 million people in Sudan are facing acute hunger, with 630,000 at risk of famine.
In a post on Facebook, OCHA announced that the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has allocated $58 million to boost food production and support famine-prevention efforts in Sudan and 10 other countries. The agency added that, despite conflict and displacement, many Sudanese farmers have worked to rebuild their livelihoods.
More than two years of war have battered Sudan’s economy, slashing output across key sectors, driving up unemployment, fueling runaway inflation, and weakening the local currency. Deteriorating sanitation and the collapse of the health system have also triggered outbreaks of disease.
