Worker dies after torture by SAF intelligence in Sudan’s Blue Nile

A cargo worker died after being detained and allegedly tortured by SAF intelligence personnel in Roro, family members said on Monday.

Relatives of Abkar Yahya Ishaq said he was seized following a dispute at a local shop when he told an intelligence officer to wait in line for sugar like other customers. The officer later returned with two colleagues who arrested Yahya, a family source told Darfur24, requesting anonymity.

He was held for two days and subjected to severe beatings, the source said. Yahya was released late September in critical condition. His family attempted to transfer him from Roro to Damazin for treatment, but he died en route in the Agadi area, before reaching hospital.

The Roro Workers’ Union condemned what it called a “heinous crime” and held military intelligence in Roro fully responsible. It urged prosecutors to open an urgent investigation and bring those involved to justice, saying the harshest penalties were needed to deter future abuses.

The union said Yahya was the sole provider for two families and leaves several children facing an uncertain future.
