Darfur governor hails ICC Kushayb verdict, urges handover of fugitives

Darfur regional governor and Presidential Council member El Hadi Idris Yahya welcomed Monday’s International Criminal Court verdict convicting Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-al-Rahman (“Ali Kushayb”) on 27 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Mukjar, Deleig, Bindisi and other parts of Wadi Salih in 2003–2004.

Calling the ruling “a victory for justice” and long-awaited redress for Darfur’s victims, Idris said the decision underscores that grave crimes do not expire and that delayed justice “is not defeated.”

He urged the immediate transfer to The Hague of all ICC fugitives from the former regime, alleging some continue to receive protection from SAF junta in Port Sudan. Maintaining such protection, he said, violates international justice and abets those “with blood on their hands,” placing direct legal and moral responsibility on those obstructing accountability.

Idris added that lasting stability in Darfur depends on justice for victims, restitution, and the rule of law, and he called on residents to unite, reject hatred, and work together for a future of dignity and peace.
