Burhan loses tribal backing as Zaghawa leaders reject Joint Force

Local sources revealed on Tuesday that Zaghawa tribal leaders have rejected the presence of the Joint Force fighting alongside Sudan’s army in Karnoi, North Darfur. The Joint Force, operating under the command of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, reportedly became involved in clashes between two Zaghawa clans — the Kleiba and Gigargi — taking sides instead of maintaining neutrality.

According to Al-Jamaheer newspaper, local leaders informed SAF commanders in Karnoi that they opposed the participation of any Joint Force members in operations aimed at separating the warring clans. Sources said the SAF command accepted the request, ordering the removal of the Joint Force from conflict zones on Tuesday and instructing its members to withdraw immediately.

However, the Joint Force allegedly refused to comply, sparking a heated verbal confrontation between its leaders and army officials. Witnesses described days of intense violence in Karnoi, where both heavy and light weapons were deployed, leaving dozens dead or injured.

The fighting has since spread to neighbouring areas, deepening fears that the tribal conflict could spiral beyond control and further destabilise North Darfur. Amid the smoke and sorrow hanging over Karnoi, local voices warn that unless neutral forces step in, ancient loyalties may ignite fresh cycles of vengeance.
