Senegal opposition presses Faye to set date for local elections

Senegalese opposition leaders are stepping up pressure on President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to issue decrees setting a date for local elections.

Uncertainty is growing over the political calendar as municipal authorities across the West African country approach the end of their five-year terms.

Tensions within the governing coalition have also increased following a rift between Faye and Ousmane Sonko, whom the president removed as prime minister earlier this year.

The dispute ended the political partnership that helped bring the coalition to power in the 2024 presidential election.

Decrees setting the election timetable and reopening national voter registration have yet to be published, leaving local administrations in uncertainty.

Political analysts warn the deadlock could disrupt governance as Senegal faces serious economic challenges, including mounting public debt.
