Sudan’s former president Omar al-Bashir has reportedly been admitted to hospital in the northern city of Merowe following a deterioration in his health, according to Sudanese media.
Sudan News reported on Tuesday, citing unnamed sources, that al-Bashir required medical attention after his condition worsened, prompting his transfer to a hospital in Northern State.
The former president, who has been living in Merowe under the supervision of Sudanese authorities, is reportedly receiving treatment amid renewed calls for him to be allowed to travel abroad for specialist medical care.
Sources cited by the outlet said arrangements concerning his treatment were being handled through an adviser to Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. However, no official medical statement has been released detailing al-Bashir’s condition.
Sudanese writer Hassan Ismail said in a social media post that the former president had suffered a medical episode requiring hospitalisation.
Ismail said he had attempted to obtain permission to visit al-Bashir but was unable to do so.
He called on the authorities to allow the former president to seek treatment outside Sudan, arguing that his age and medical needs warranted humanitarian consideration.
Al-Bashir was transferred to Merowe in September 2024 alongside several senior figures from his former government after his lawyers raised concerns about their health and access to medical care.
The former president ruled Sudan for nearly three decades after seizing power in a 1989 military coup. He was overthrown in April 2019 following months of mass demonstrations against his government.
He was subsequently convicted on corruption-related charges and faced further legal proceedings before Sudan’s current war disrupted the judicial process.
Al-Bashir is also wanted by the International Criminal Court under arrest warrants for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed during the Darfur conflict.
His reported hospitalisation comes amid longstanding demands from his legal representatives for access to medical treatment outside Sudan, while the international warrants against him remain unresolved.
