Pentagon puts cost of US war against Iran at over $47 billion

The cost of the United States’ war against Iran has surpassed $47 billion, according to Pentagon figures reviewed by Reuters, marking an increase of more than 25 percent from the Defense Department’s previous estimate in July.

The latest figures show that replacing ammunition and missiles used during the conflict accounts for the largest share of the costs, exceeding $29 billion.

An additional $6 billion is needed to replace military equipment lost or damaged during operations.

However, the Pentagon’s assessment does not clearly account for the potentially substantial costs of repairing American military bases damaged by Iranian missile and drone attacks.

The new estimate comes as Washington continues to enforce a naval blockade against Iran, adding to the financial and military consequences of the conflict that began on February 28.

In September, The Washington Post reported that US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees American military operations across the Middle East, had estimated the war’s cost at approximately $43.6 billion through early September.

According to documents reviewed by the newspaper, that assessment included $28 billion to replenish depleted ammunition and missile stockpiles and more than $4.3 billion to replace military equipment destroyed or damaged during the fighting.

The September figures were already significantly higher than estimates previously disclosed by President Donald Trump’s administration.

The assessment also excluded potential future expenses facing American taxpayers, including billions of dollars that could be required to reconstruct US military installations damaged or destroyed during Iranian attacks.

The latest Pentagon figures suggest the financial burden of the conflict continues to grow, with the full cost of restoring damaged military infrastructure still uncertain.
