At least six people have been confirmed dead in a fire that ravaged a hotel in Patna, India on Thursday.
Rescue teams are still searching the wreckage for survivors, with fears the death toll may rise.
The blaze erupted in Patna’s Pal Hotel and quickly engulfed nearby buildings before firefighters managed to extinguish it after a grueling three-hour battle.
A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed six fatalities and warned the number could climb as rescue efforts continue.
At least 18 individuals suffered injuries and are currently in critical condition at a local hospital.
Investigators suspect negligence played a significant role in the disaster.
Senior fire brigade officer Sobha Ohatkar highlighted India’s widespread issue of poor safety standards and lax enforcement of regulations as potential contributing factors. Many commercial buildings, including hotels, lack proper fire safety measures like functional fire-fighting equipment and designated emergency exits.
This incident underscores the urgency for stricter safety protocols and improved enforcement across India to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
