Russia confirms coordination with US on rising violence in Syria

Russia is working closely with the United States regarding the escalating violence in Syria, TASS reported on Monday, citing Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations.

The recent clashes between supporters of former President Bashar al-Assad and the new Islamist rulers of Syria have resulted in over 1,000 deaths, mostly civilians, in Assad’s coastal stronghold.

Russia, a key ally of Assad, continues to maintain military facilities in regions where the violence has flared up. Assad, who fled to Moscow in December following his ouster, had relied heavily on Russian support during his rule.

In response to questions from journalists ahead of a U.N. Security Council meeting, Nebenzia confirmed Russia’s cooperation with the U.S. on the ongoing crisis, stating, “Yes,” as reported by TASS.

The Kremlin has expressed serious concern over the situation, urging an immediate halt to the bloodshed in Syria.
