Nearly 400,000 people have been displaced from a famine-stricken camp in Sudan’s Darfur region, according to the UN’s migration agency.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported the mass displacement on Monday, following recent fighting.
Battles between General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and the rival Rapid Support Forces intensifed near the Zamzam Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp, the largest in Darfur, on Sunday.
The camp had already been struggling with severe food shortages due to the ongoing conflict.
The IOM said between 60,000 and 80,000 households were forced to flee as a result of heightened insecurity in the region.
With Darfur already facing a humanitarian crisis, the sudden displacement of thousands exacerbates the dire conditions.
The camp’s inhabitants were already vulnerable, living in precarious conditions due to famine and lack of resources.
Humanitarian aid agencies are now struggling to reach those affected by the conflict, with the risk of further displacement and food insecurity mounting in the region.
The international community continues to watch closely as the situation unfolds, with hopes for a ceasefire diminishing in the face of escalating violence.
