Beja Congress calls SAF Tura massacre a war crime, urges action

The opposition Beja Congress has strongly condemned the deadly airstrike by General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) warplanes on the Tura market in North Darfur, calling it a war crime and demanding urgent international intervention.

In a statement released by the party’s Political Secretary, Abdelrahman Shanqab, the Beja Congress detailed the devastating attack, which occurred on Monday.

The SAF’s airstrike targeted the bustling market, leading to a preliminary toll of scores dead and hundreds injured, while residents were shopping. The group called the assault a blatant violation of International Humanitarian Law, emphasizing its status as a full-scale war crime.

“The attack on civilians is a gross violation of international law and a major crime against the Sudanese people,” Shanqab said, urging the international community and human rights organizations to initiate an immediate investigation and document the incident.

The Beja Congress criticized the ongoing conflict, which has destabilized the security and safety of Sudan’s citizens, and warned that the continuation of such attacks only exacerbates the suffering of the population. Shanqab also highlighted the need for a peaceful resolution to the crisis, stressing that it remains the only viable solution to end the violence.

The group called on humanitarian organizations to quickly provide aid to the wounded and those affected by the airstrike.

In closing, the Beja Congress expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, offering prayers for the deceased and wishing a swift recovery for the injured.
