Two military aircraft were destroyed in a drone strike on Atbara Airport in Sudan’s River Nile state early Thursday, according to local sources, marking the latest in a series of attacks on military infrastructure tied to the Islamic Movement.
The strike, which occurred in the early hours, also damaged additional military assets, including storage platforms for aircraft and heavy weaponry at the airport. No casualty figures were immediately available.
The drone attack comes amid growing momentum by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who have recently made strategic gains in North Kordofan. RSF units have encircled the key city of El-Obeid and secured control over several surrounding areas, including the Chevrolet Military Base, Karab al-Toum, and the al-‘Uweinat Triangle — further tightening pressure on forces loyal to SAF chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
The RSF’s advances threaten to shift the balance in Sudan’s civil war, now in its second year, with major implications for control of the country’s central and northern corridors.
