Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched back-to-back assaults on General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) 22nd Division, crossing minefields on the city’s edge and pushing to within a kilometre of the base, local sources said.
Heavy-weapons fire and drones hit the garrison from early Monday until midday, then resumed Tuesday, while SAF jets struck RSF positions around the city. Witnesses said RSF fighters briefly reached Babanusa’s water station before pulling back.
Last week RSF infiltrated the city’s northeast but were repelled after mines ringed 10 km out destroyed much of the attacking column, killing or wounding about 30 fighters, a military source claimed.
Residents fled Babanusa after an RSF raid last year, leaving the town largely empty as both sides vie for control of the key rail hub.
