SAF detains Sudanese man who filmed soldier looting Bahri home

General al-Burhan’s SAF units have arrested Ahmed Abdel-Qader Mohamed Ali after he shot video of a uniformed soldier looting an empty house in the Safiya district of Khartoum Bahri, relatives and neighbourhood activists said on Thursday.

Agents seized his mobile phone and took him to an undisclosed location, the sources said, adding that family members have been unable to contact or locate him. The 26-year-old faces allegations of supporting both the Forces of Freedom and Change opposition coalition and, contradictorily, the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF), according to a brief charge sheet seen by activists.

Locals described Ahmed as the devout grandson of noted cleric Sheikh Awadallah Saleh with no party affiliation. He had refused to flee with his family to Egypt, choosing instead to guard their home and several neighbouring properties whose owners had left the war-torn capital, they said.

Footage circulating online shows a man in SAF fatigues carrying household items out of a residence. The Sudan Times could not independently verify the video or the soldier’s identity, and the SAF did not respond to requests for comment.

Rights groups say arbitrary arrests and looting have surged during the 14-month conflict pitting General al-Burhan’s (SAF) against the RSF, which has displaced more than nine million people and plunged Khartoum into lawlessness. Activists demanded Ahmed’s immediate release, calling his detention “a warning to anyone who documents abuses.”
