For the sixth consecutive day on Saturday, the Sudan Founding Alliance Forces (SFAF) have been evacuating civilians from El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, as hostilities intensify between General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
On April 12, the SFAF reported the successful evacuation of approximately 2,100 families who had been trapped in the conflict zone.
The SFAF, a coalition formed in February 2025 comprising 23 political and military factions—including the RSF and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North—has expressed its commitment to safeguarding civilians. The alliance has pledged to facilitate voluntary evacuations and establish humanitarian corridors to ensure safe passage for those fleeing the violence.
El Fasher has become a focal point in Sudan’s ongoing civil war, which erupted in April 2023 following a failed power-sharing agreement between the SAF and RSF.
The city, home to approximately 1.8 million people, remains the last major urban center in Darfur under government control. Recent clashes have led to significant civilian casualties and the displacement of thousands.
The humanitarian situation in El Fasher is dire. Attacks on displacement camps, such as Zamzam and Abu Shorouk, have resulted in over 100 deaths, including aid workers and children. The United Nations has condemned these assaults, highlighting the exacerbation of an already critical humanitarian crisis in the region .
The SFAF’s evacuation efforts come amidst international concern over the escalating violence and its impact on civilians. The alliance’s actions aim to mitigate the humanitarian disaster unfolding in El Fasher and surrounding areas.
