Sudan’s RSF launches first drone attack on Port Sudan

Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) carried out a drone attack on a SAF air base and nearby facilities near Port Sudan Airport, marking the first RSF strike on the eastern port city, SAF spokesperson reported on Sunday.

No casualties were reported from the attack.

The RSF has yet to comment on the incident. Previously, the Sudanese group targeted power stations in SAF-controlled regions in central and northern Sudan, but these strikes had caused limited casualties.

The drone strike on Port Sudan signals a significant shift in the ongoing two-year conflict between General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) and the RSF. The eastern regions, which house many displaced people, had largely avoided heavy bombardment until now.

In response, the SAF has reinforced its presence around critical infrastructure in Port Sudan, including closing roads leading to the presidential palace and SAF command.

Port Sudan, home to the nation’s primary airport, SAF headquarters, and seaport, has long been seen as a relatively safe area amid the conflict.

The war, which began in April 2023 amid a power struggle between the army and RSF, has devastated Sudan, causing widespread famine and leaving millions displaced.
