Sudan’s SAF and Iran: Military aid or political backing?

As Sudan’s conflict rages on, accusations against General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) continue to mount, with reports of widespread human rights violations, including the alleged use of chemical weapons.

Credible evidence suggests that these actions are receiving external support—primarily from Iran. Reports circulating on social media paint a complex picture of the SAF’s role and its sources of backing.

Documented Violations Against Civilians

The SAF has been implicated in numerous violations against civilians in regions such as Darfur and Khartoum. These include indiscriminate airstrikes that have killed large numbers of non-combatants and direct attacks on civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and schools. International organizations have provided evidence suggesting the use of chemical weapons—allegedly as a tactic to instill fear, tighten military control, and suppress opposition forces, particularly the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). External military support is believed to have enabled the SAF to sustain its operations despite international condemnation.

Iran’s Role in Arming SAF

Iran’s involvement in the Sudanese conflict has drawn increasing scrutiny. Reports suggest Tehran has supplied the SAF with advanced military equipment, including drones that have been deployed in combat.

Intelligence assessments indicate that this support is part of a broader Iranian strategy to expand its influence in Africa, with Sudan serving as a strategic gateway to the Red Sea. By bolstering the Sudanese military, Iran is not only helping it counter the RSF and other rebel factions but is also advancing its own geopolitical ambitions in the region.

A Call for International Action

Sudan is experiencing one of the darkest chapters in its history, with civilians bearing the brunt of a brutal war. Reports of chemical weapons use, infrastructure destruction, and mass displacement highlight the urgent need for international intervention. These are not isolated incidents but systematic actions enabled by foreign support, prolonging the conflict and deepening the crisis.

Immediate action is essential to halt Sudan’s worsening humanitarian crisis, as ongoing bombardment, mass displacement, and human rights abuses continue to devastate civilian populations.

Every delay prolongs their suffering and deepens the crisis. A unified response from Sudanese political actors and international bodies is crucial to amplifying calls for justice, increasing pressure for sanctions, and holding perpetrators accountable. At the same time, disrupting military supply chains—particularly the foreign support enabling SAF—can significantly weaken its ability to sustain further aggression.

Beyond immediate security concerns, coordinated efforts to end the violence are necessary to restore public trust and offer Sudanese civilians hope for a path toward stability. With mounting evidence of foreign-backed atrocities, Sudan’s conflict has become more than a domestic issue—it is a critical test of global resolve. The international community must act decisively to curb the bloodshed or risk allowing yet another humanitarian catastrophe to spiral out of control.
