UN: 2,100 dead in Sudan cholera outbreak, millions at risk

The United Nations said Thursday that more than 2,100 people have died from cholera in Sudan since the outbreak began in July 2024, as the disease continues to spread amid ongoing conflict and infrastructure collapse.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), over 83,000 suspected cholera cases have been reported, including 32,000 this year alone. The spread is accelerating in Darfur, with cross-border infections now being reported in Chad and South Sudan.

The UN warns that more than 33.5 million people across Sudan are at risk, including 5.7 million children under five.

An urgent appeal for $50 million has been launched to contain the outbreak, but the cholera response plan is only 16% funded. The UN cautioned that without additional support, deaths will continue to rise, critical supplies will run out, and Sudan’s wider humanitarian crisis will deepen further.
