The United Nations is increasingly concerned about escalating tensions in al-Fashir in Sudan’s North Darfur region amid reports that the Rapid Support Forces are encircling the city, signalling a possible imminent attack, the UN’s spokesperson said on Friday.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ envoy is engaging with all parties to de-escalate tensions in the area, the spokesperson said.
The Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been engaged in a war since last April that has resulted in 15,000 deaths and more than 8 million displaced and refugees, according to the UN.
