A high-ranking US official, Special Envoy Tom Perriello, arrived in Sudan on Monday to meet with the general Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
The primary goal of the visit is to discuss to end the ongoing civil war and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid.
Perriello’s meeting with Burhan, held in the Red Sea city of Port Sudan.
Both parties emphasized the need to cease hostilities and ensure the safe and efficient distribution of aid to those affected by the conflict.
The visit comes as the international community continues to grapple with the devastating consequences of the war, which has resulted in widespread displacement, loss of life, and a severe humanitarian crisis.
The UN Security Council’s recent failure to pass a resolution condemning the violence underscores the challenges faced by the international community in addressing the situation.
Despite the challenges, the US envoy expressed optimism about recent progress in expanding humanitarian access.
The US, as one of the largest aid donors to Sudan, is committed to providing essential supplies to those in need across the country.
While some progress has been made, including the authorization of aid deliveries through the Adre border crossing, concerns persist regarding the potential misuse of this route for military purposes.
As the international community continues to exert pressure on the warring parties, it remains to be seen whether Perriello’s visit will lead to a breakthrough in the peace process and bring much-needed relief to the Sudanese people.
