Egyptian officials and the U.S. ambassador celebrated the restoration of several Historic Cairo monuments, including the Bimaristan al-Muayyad Sheikh, a 1420 A.D. hospital complex known for its imposing crenulated facade and kufic inscriptions.
The Bimaristan al-Muayyad Sheikh stands out with its grand architectural design and inlaid Arabic kufic inscriptions, reflecting its historical significance in the heart of Cairo’s rich cultural heritage.
Mohamed Ismael, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, noted that the restoration reflects a new government policy of engaging civil society in preserving Egypt’s treasured antiquities.
The restored building is set to serve as a cultural center involving local community members, blending history with modern functionality while reviving the historic character of the neighborhood.
Other sites restored with U.S. Agency for International Development aid include the 18th-century Sabil Kuttab of Ruqayya Dudu and the 14th-century Gate of Manjak al-Silahdar, both inaugurated during Sunday’s ceremony.
